Our proprietary PEAK System is designed to help you improve, hit higher levels of performance, and find more meaning in your work.

My Dad often talks about the importance from learning from others. “None of us has an original idea,” he often says. “We are all a product of what we read, hear and observe”. In that spirit, I’d like to ask you to take 5 minutes, right now, to watch this video delivered by Ernie Johnson to the Alabama football team. If you truly absorb the message, it will make you want to Be a Better Person.

Ernie Johnson hosts the TNT basketball pregame show with Shaquille O’Neil, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith. This message about his job, his special needs son, and knowing our role is very powerful. Some key takeaways, as it applies to our business:

  • What’s your role?  There is value in everybody. As you seek to grow your business, I strongly encourage you to tap into our team (or some team). No one can be successful on their own. Leverage our marketing team to get in front of more people; use the expertise of our annuity and life marketers to better understand the right product for your customer. You are not alone…we often say, “At Tarkenton Financial, you are not one of many, you are one of us.” Leverage our team!
  • The reason for the success of their NBA TV show is because nobody tries to make it about themselves. It’s about their collective goal. Our most successful advisors are driven by helping their clients, achieve their goal to sleep well at night in retirement. While you may aspire to be in our Top 10 or Top 25, you will have a higher likelihood of success if you make it about your clients. Not about you. As a sage NFL Hall of Famer likes to say, “the mission of business is to help people.” Do you really believe that and how do you live that out each day?

Ernie Johnson and his wife adopted a special needs boy from Ukraine. The nurses told them the boy was “No Good.” Yet, in the video above, you will see how their son made an incredible impact on his teammates, classmates, and, as this has now been viewed 4.5 million times, a whole bunch of other people that he’s never even met.

Everybody has a role. Everyone matters. As you go about your work today and this week, I encourage you to think about these two principles:

  1. How am I going to make somebody’s life better today?
  2. How can I be a better human?

When you know your role, work with your teammates towards a collective goal, and strive to make someone’s life better today, amazing things will happen. Just watch.

“Love you, too!”

Matt Tarkenton
